Objective:

The CARICOM Fellowship aims to provide young legal professionals from Caribbean OAS Member States with the opportunity to understand and apply the mechanisms of protection of the inter-American system of human rights.

Program:

The fellow will support the work of the Monitoring Section 3 of the ES/IACHR, under the supervision of specialists and the Section coordinator.

Duration:

The Fellowship is for an 11-month term.

Duties:

  • Research human rights situations in specific countries and prepare respective reports.
  • Monitor human rights conditions in the Caribbean region.
  • Assist in preparing annual, thematic, and country reports focused on human rights in the Caribbean.
  • Prepare memos and documents for hearings, working meetings, and Commission visits.
  • Summarize and brief for hearings, working meetings, and visits.
  • Collaborate on initiatives promoting and disseminating the inter-American human rights system.
  • Draft letters, press releases, and statements related to Caribbean human rights situations.
  • Perform other related tasks assigned during the Fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Must have necessary devices and stable internet for remote work.
  • Advanced proficiency in English; Spanish proficiency is a strong advantage; knowledge of Portuguese or French is an advantage.
  • Possess a law degree from an officially recognized university (attach copy).
  • Law degree must have been issued within the past 7 years from the application deadline.
  • Professional or educational experience in human rights.

  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Copy of the Law degree (issued within the last 7 years).
  • One letter of recommendation (academic or professional).
  • Language level certificate (if applicable). Attach explanatory note if not available. No certificate needed if English is the native language. Provide certificates for other languages.
  • Cover letter detailing qualifications and fit for the position.

Benefits:

  • A stipend of USD $3,200 per month for the Fellowship duration.
  • Fellowship recipient is responsible for purchasing their health coverage and must prove this to the Executive Secretariat of the IACHR.
  • A certificate of participation upon satisfactory completion of the Fellowship.
  • Potential in-person participation in SE/IACHR promotional activities, resources permitting.

Responsibilities:

  • Formally accept the Fellowship in writing, confirming full availability for remote work.
  • Notify the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights immediately if unable to complete the Fellowship after acceptance.
  • Ensure the necessary technological means to start the Fellowship remotely on the established date.
  • Reimburse the SE/IACHR for any expenses if the Fellowship is terminated or resigned without sufficient cause after the start of the program.
